During the meeting they discussed issues of mutual interest in the region, including the fight against ISIS and the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The American security officials spoke of the many friends that Kurdistan has in the United States. The KRG delegation thanked the US for providing critical assistance to Peshmerga forces. Mr Barzani set out the challenges facing Kurdistan and Iraq after ISIS is defeated militarily since many of the problems that led to the creation of ISIS have yet to be resolved. They also discussed the mechanisms of peaceful dialogue and negotiation that will shape future bilateral relations between Kurdistan, Iraq, and the US.
Separately, the delegation met the State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Jonathan Cohen to discuss the fight against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
